Communication Podcasts

In Professor Steven Fuller's podcast titled "Communication Junkie," communication in person and online are discussed. Through humor, research, and personal storytelling, Fuller tackles various communication topics, Fuller informs his listeners about how they can better communicate in all types of relationships.

His episode titled, "Self-Awareness and the Johari Window" takes a humorous, but very real, look at how the first steps one can take to be a better online communicator. Throughout the podcast, Fuller touches on the Johari Window, a table that includes information about the four types of self-disclosure that a communicator engages in. The window itself looks at the conscious and subconscious factors that go into self-disclosure. Fuller takes an interesting approach to the Johari Window, explaining in the podcast that self-disclosure online is one of the most beneficial ways that a communicator can get in touch with their "blind self."

Many of the remarks that Fuller makes with regard to the Johari Window reaffirmed what he have learned about the Johari Window throughout our course thus far. In Julia Green's textbook "Communicating Online," the Johari Window's purpose is delved into. Green's explanation of the four categories of self-disclosure in the Johari Window seemed to be aligned with Fuller's conversation about self-awareness when she discussed the window's ability to self-disclose in order to deepen intimate relationships. Fuller explains that becoming a better relationship partner begins with being aware of how you truly are. This is similar to Green's passage about how "without the opportunity for self-disclosure and active listening, relationships can be based on superficiality, which can lead to relational termination," so self-awareness in disclosure combats that superficiality (Green, p.125).
